Orthodontic Treatment to Fix an Overbite
An overbite can get in the way of many things, so most people turn to orthodontic treatment as a way to fix it. However, there is much to consider when receiving orthodontic treatment in order to fix any oral issues that one might have.
As it relates to overbites specifically, there are not many options that one can choose from. However, dental technology has improved greatly over the years, and the available options can produce positive and long-lasting results.
In this article, we outline how orthodontic treatment can fix an overbite. Being aware of what might be involved can be helpful when considering all your options. Continue reading to find out more!
Orthodontic treatment for overbites
Patients should know what orthodontic treatment can do for an overbite. Here are the three most popular options that a patient can consider when trying to have their overbite fixed.
1. Invisalign®
Invisalign is a brand of clear aligners that are used in orthodontic treatment. They are removable, clear pieces that go over the top or bottom arch, or in some cases, both. The treatment process involves the use of multiple aligners, which are switched out every couple of months. The series of aligners are printed at the start of the treatment process, based on dental technology that predicts each shift.
Through the use of these clear aligners, a person’s jaw can be shifted to fix the overbite. Elastic bands, referred to as Precision Cuts, are commonly used to attach the aligners so there is more pressure forcing the jaw forward. Most people think that Invisalign is used just to straighten teeth, but it can also correct an overbite.
All that said, it is important to note that clear aligners tend to only address minor overbites. Severe overbites will have to be corrected with alternative options.
2. Braces
Traditional braces are most commonly used for straightening teeth. After the teeth are straight, the overbite can be focused on. Springs, coils, and rubber bands will be used to attach the top portion of braces to the bottom so the overbite slowly gets corrected. Traditional braces can make oral hygiene more difficult, but they are typically used when correcting an overbite.
Nowadays, there are two options when it comes to braces. While the traditional metal braces are still around — and with good reason, as they are known to be the most versatile — clear braces have also become popular over the years. Instead of metal wires and brackets, everything is tooth colored or transparent. This means the braces are more discreet in the mouth during the process of overbite correction.
3. Surgery
Sometimes, severe overbites require work on the jawbone itself. The jaw may have to be repositioned in order for the overbite to be fixed. In these scenarios, surgery can alter the jawbone so the overbite is corrected. Surgery is only necessary for extreme scenarios, in which an orthodontic specialist and oral surgeon will work together.
It is also good for patients to know that surgery for overbite correction is only done as a last resort. If orthodontic treatment, such as braces or aligners, does not effectively correct the overbite, then surgery may be required. Even then, it will only be performed if the function of one's jaw is severely affected.
How orthodontic treatment can help
Depending on the chosen orthodontic treatment, a person’s overbite can be pulled back so the top part of the teeth aligns with the bottom part. There are two types of overbites: horizontal and vertical.
- Horizontal overbites occur when the top teeth jut out in front of the bottom teeth
- Vertical overbites occur when the top set of teeth overlaps with the bottom set, causing an uneven bite
Through surgery, Invisalign, or traditional braces, overbites can be fixed.
